Overview:

The Plei App has officially expanded into our 15th region, New York City! 🍏 After months and months of hard work and effort from all of us at Plei, one of our dream destinations for the app has finally come true. We couldn’t be more excited to witness the great reception from what is truly a huge community of ballers itching to have access to our service. 📲

To kick off this historic expansion, we will be partnering with Socceroof NYC. As part of our ongoing blog series, we will be highlighting all of our partner facilities in every region where Plei has touched down. 🛬

Socceroof immediately took the NYC pickup soccer scene by storm when they first opened the doors to their original facility back in early 2018. ⛈️

It’s safe to say that the project has achieved precisely what it proposed way back when it was only an idea in the minds of founders Jean-David Tartour and Jerome Meary. To bring Socceroof to life, they looked to the already-established culture of small-sided, easy-to-access soccer across Europe, focusing specifically on France, their home country.

Prior experience went a long way when it came to Socceroof. Tartour had already established a critically acclaimed company in France called LE FIVE, which currently runs a grand total of 22 venues across the country. It would be an understatement to say that they essentially dominate the pickup soccer scene there.

The concept of LE FIVE provides players of all ages and backgrounds with easily accessible, top-notch turf fields. Each facility is also equipped with attractive social spaces, sports bars and other amenities so that guests can also sit back, relax and have a good time.

This unique blend of sporting spaces combined with an inviting setting and ambience similar to that of a restaurant, club or lounge is precisely the vision that Tartour and Meary had in mind to recreate. What they quickly realized is that the indoor soccer market in the United States was virtually untouched when it came to providing a genuine experience of the beautiful game.

There was no real name-brand or household name in the country that could be compared to something like LE FIVE in France. Just a bunch of worn-down, cheap facilities that actually do more to take the love and passion out of the game instead of advancing it.

Of course, soccer growth in the United States has seen a steady rise over the last two decades, but it still cannot be compared to the way it is deeply rooted in the cultures of South America, Europe and Africa, for example. With the 2026 World Cup just 3 years away, it will surely be well-received, but there is still so much work to do.

Tartour and Meary aimed to fix this lack of passion, and looked towards none other than the City That Never Sleeps to begin their American journey.

With this blueprint in mind of creating a refreshing overall experience that goes the extra mile to provide more to a community than just a fun place to play soccer, they officially opened their original Socceroof venue in the industrial waterfront of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, in early 2018.

3 years later, they began production of two brand-new locations midway through 2021, one in Long Island City, Queens and another in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Both facilities opened at the turn of the new year on January 1st, 2022, and have been well-received.

A Socceroof facility can be best described as a diverse, fresh take on soccer. All three venues are located on building rooftops, hence the name, and feature top-quality small-sided fields that are open all year-long. On top of that, there are both indoor and outdoor social spaces for non-playing guests to take advantage of as well, promising plenty of nightlife potential.

Throw in the financial backing of global soccer figures like Manchester United player Anthony Martial and former Paris Saint-Germain owner Patrick Sayer, support from Major League Soccer and partnerships with New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls, and you have a trident of soccer facilities that is here to truly grow the beautiful game in the Big Apple and beyond.

Their mission statement on their website says it best:

“Socceroof will change the way you think, play and experience soccer.”

Give Socceroof’s Sunset Park location one visit and you’ll realize why it’s one of the most sought-after places to play the beautiful game in all of New York. 💯

The story of Socceroof started here back in early 2018, and it remains the largest facility compared to the Long Island and Crown Heights venues, with 75,000 sq. ft. of space. 🤯

Upon arriving, you’ll walk into a large indoor space featuring a total of ten (10) fields for 5v5 play. Flexibility is a prominent trait of Socceroof, as you’ll be able to combine any 2 or 3 fields together to accommodate bigger games. 🙌

Socceroof doesn’t play when it comes to offering the best experience playing the game that brings us together. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

The fields are equipped with next-generation synthetic grass, none of that cheap stuff that you may find elsewhere. All games are recorded via cameras equipped in the ceiling, and you can watch your replays afterwards on their website. 🎥

Keep in mind that games here are futsal-style because of the walls enclosing the turf, meaning the ball does not go out and the pace of the game is a lot quicker than regular soccer with actual out of bounds. ⚡

Full-size locker rooms are available for players who need to change clothes or even clean up after a tough match. Restrooms are also located on-site, featuring a multitude of vintage World Cup posters plastered on the wall, covering it entirely. Three doors here are each themed to look like the national team shirts of legendary #10s Diego Maradona, Pelé and Zinedine Zidane, with ‘Socceroof’ written right above. 🐐

We don’t know about you guys, but this all makes me want to use the restrooms here even more. 😅

Let’s talk about what makes Socceroof at Sunset Park the ideal location to hang out and just have a good time with friends and family. First off, you’ve got a sports bar offering plenty of food options, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. On top of that, a separate café area is available if you’re more into coffee and pastries. All things considered, it’s basically its own restaurant. 🍴

Now, for the cherry on top. 🍒 The largest rooftop bar and patio deck area is located here, offering breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and even the Statue of Liberty. 🗽 Trust us when we say that this area is perfect for all sorts of feel-good events. Check out the photos below if you don’t believe us. 👇

One of the walls outside is designed with some lovely wall art: the design features a collage of triangular shapes of all kinds of colors, and a message that reads “DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH.” 💪

Everything from couches, high tables to bar-style chairs and coffee tables are available both inside and out. The outside patio area is also equipped with ambience string lights that stretch from end to end. Audio systems are installed inside and out as well. 🔊

A recent addition to the Socceroof Sunset Park patio is a teqball table, if that’s your kind of thing.

Other amenities include field rentals, leagues & tournaments for all ages, youth classes and camps and the ability to host birthday parties. 🎉 Check out their website to learn more about all of their offerings. 📲
